Bluetooth / Wifi Data Collection
Bluetooth data collection offers multiple applications for the traffic and transportation data collection industry.
It can provide both wide and close area:
- Origin/destination (O&D) surveys
- Pedestrian & passenger origin-destination / routing surveys
- Car park duration profiles
- Journey time surveys
Bluetooth / WiFi data collection is a data collection method that identifies the unique MAC addresses of passing Bluetooth / WiFi enabled devices such as: smart phones, earpieces, Sat-Nav’s, hands free kits etc.
The data is then stored in roadside collection units.
The Benefits
- This technology is an alternative to ANPR or roadside interview surveys. It is used to achieve an overall impression of origin and destination movements for the travelling public. It collects data on motorised and non-motorised travellers who use the road network or public transport network.
- These recording units have the ability to record for short and long term survey periods when required.
- Complex algorithms remove multiple hits, (the same vehicles) to build an overall origin-destination matrix for a reasonably high sample (typically 20-40%) of vehicles/enabled devices.
- The data can in some cases be remotely accessed via the Internet, allowing for processing to run parallel with data collection.
- Bluetooth/WiFi technology for journey time surveys is a perfect solution to driver/observer surveys, as it increases the sample rate exponentially at a very competitive cost.
- It can be used for wide ranging pedestrian networks, for example public transport hubs and interchanges to provide information on movements that have typically been difficult to capture manually in the past.
Traffinomics Proprietary Hardware & Software Assets
Traffinomics Ltd. recognise the fallibility of current generation Bluetooth systems. All are Internet based systems. All are manufactured and controlled by Internet based companies.
The negative features of SMS based systems is:
- Required combination a lot of process elements to successfully complete data collection
- The infrastructure for Internet providers in both Ireland and the UK cannot transmit signals for 100% of urban and rural areas
- There is no guarantee of constant connectivity to hosting servers
- Interruption of data collection, which inhibits confirmation that equipment, is on-line
- Internet providers do not know if equipment is live
These negative features are a common occurrence with many of the existing market solutions. They cause inaccurate data collection.
Our R & D team developed our proprietary hardware and software assets to collect, analyse and report data.
- Our system operates on a native application, which enables local data storage. This avoids the risk of data loss through poor Internet connectivity.
- By maintaining complete ownership of the system from data collection to reporting, Traffinomics Ltd. is able to identify anomalies and correct them far more expeditiously than other available traffic solutions.
- We are able to turn data around in a shorter period of time, as we are not reliant on a third party to process data for us.
- It is a system that fits our Industry and client needs.
